The Lagos State Government has denied reports claiming that ₦4.2 billion was budgeted in the 2026 budget for the purchase of tables, chairs and microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor.
The government said the claim was wrong and came from a misunderstanding of the budget figures.
In a statement released on the issue, the government said reports suggesting that ₦4.2 billion was meant only for office furniture and 30 microphones were inaccurate.
“The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to reports alleging that ₦4.2 billion was proposed in the 2026 budget for the purchase of office furniture and microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor. This claim is inaccurate and results from a clear misinterpretation of the approved capital provisions,” the statement said.
According to the government, the total capital allocation for the Office of the Deputy Governor, Lagos State in 2026 is ₦4,247,816,006.
However, it explained that this amount is not meant for furniture alone.
The statement said ₦4,077,816,006 of the total sum is for the reconstruction of the Round House complex, a six-storey building that houses more than 50 offices.
“Out of the total capital expenditure of the office, the sum of ₦4,077,816,006 is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Round House complex (This is a 6-story building facility that houses over 50 offices), including structural upgrades, retrofitting works, and the provision of alternative energy infrastructure for the building, amongst others.
“The reconstruction includes structural repairs, upgrades, retrofitting works and the provision of alternative energy for the building.”
The government explained that only ₦170 million from the total capital allocation is meant for office equipment, office furniture, fittings and other related capital items.
“The balance in the sum of N170,000,000 of the budgeted capital allocated covers purchase of office equipment, office furniture & fittings and other capital items. The balance in the sum of N170,000,000 of the budgeted capital allocated covers purchase of office equipment, office furniture & fittings and other capital items,” the statement added.
“Screenshots of the relevant budget master sheet are attached for transparency and public review,” the statement further noted.
The government also said budget planning follows due process, fiscal discipline and proper accounting standards. It advised media organisations and the public to seek clarification through the right channels to avoid wrong reporting and added that it regretted any confusion caused by the budget classification.
The denial followed an earlier report circulating, which claimed that a review of the Lagos State Government’s approved 2026 budget showed that ₦4.2 billion was set aside for office furniture and 30 microphones for the Deputy Governor’s office.
The report alleged that the money was meant for the purchase of 10 executive tables and chairs, 40 visitor chairs and 120 officers’ tables and chairs for the Deputy Governor’s office and other offices. It also listed the procurement of 30 microphones for a conference room.
It further claimed that ₦97.5 million had already been spent on similar items between January and September 2025, with an additional ₦4.247 billion proposed for 2026.
The report also highlighted other allocations in the budget, including ₦35.4 billion for the construction of permanent legislative quarters and ₦20 billion for fencing, drainage, landscaping and beautification works at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex.
It noted that ₦16 billion was budgeted for community-based capital infrastructure projects.
While the Lagos State Government insists that the ₦4.2 billion figure was misunderstood, the issue has continued to raise public interest and debate about budget clarity and government spending.
