Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state to commence an emergency midterm break starting Wednesday, February 4, 2026, as a precautionary measure amid credible security threats.
The directive, described by state authorities as proactive and preventive, aims to safeguard pupils, students, teachers, and school facilities. No specific resumption date was initially provided in the initial announcement to schools, with instructions emphasizing that the situation remains fluid.
The order was communicated through the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Kogi State. In an urgent notice signed by State Chairman PST. Reuben Jimoh, school proprietors were instructed to strictly comply, with warnings that failure to do so could result in revocation of operating approvals.
The NAPPS message stated: “This is an important information and announcement from the Executive Governor of Kogi State. All schools in Kogi State must go on emergency midterm break Wednesday, being 4th/02/2026. Don't announce the resumption because we don't know yet what will happen before Monday. Pls strictly comply with this directive if not your approval will be revoked from you.”
It added that the action was “still due to security issues.”Subsequent clarifications from the state government, including statements by Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Fanwo, described the closure as a responsible step based on credible intelligence, not panic.
Fanwo noted that Governor Ododo has directed relevant security agencies to implement protective measures around schools. Many reports indicate that the emergency break has been set to last until February 16, 2026, effectively fast-forwarding the regular midterm break into a temporary shutdown to allow for enhanced security arrangements.
Parents and guardians are advised to stay alert to official government channels and school communications for updates on resumption. School administrators have been urged to fully adhere to the directive to avoid sanctions and ensure the safety of the educational community.
