Kano State Govt Inaugurates Committee to Distribute Relief to Singa Market Fire Victims

The Kano State Government has inaugurated a high-level committee to oversee the fair and transparent distribution of donations and relief support to traders affected by the devastating fire at Singa Market.

The inferno, which ravaged large sections of the bustling market, impacted an estimated 5,000 people, destroying goods and livelihoods worth significant sums and leaving many traders in distress.

The market, a key commercial hub in Kano, has drawn widespread sympathy, prompting donations from various sources.

Chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the committee comprising 23 or 24 members depending on reports includes representatives from government ministries, anti-corruption bodies, religious institutions, security agencies, the Kano Emirate Council, the State Emergency Management Agency, and affected traders themselves.

Notably, the composition features only one woman and includes a 98-year-old representative from the traditional institution.

During the inauguration, the SSG emphasized that strict measures are in place to ensure donations reach genuine beneficiaries.

The Commissioner for Justice and representative of the committee chair, Abdulkarim Kabiru Mode, reaffirmed the group's commitment to fairness, transparency, and justice, promising swift execution of their mandate.

The committee's diverse membership is designed to promote accountability and equity in identifying victims, assessing losses, and disbursing relief items and any financial aid.

Recent reports indicate the state has secured substantial intervention funds, including up to ₦8 billion in some accounts, to support recovery efforts.

Traders and residents have been encouraged to use the ongoing holy month for prayers, seeking peace and continued progress in Kano State amid the recovery process.

Authorities continue to urge caution and cooperation to prevent future incidents in the market.
