Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court has recused himself from presiding over two separate cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
The recusal occurred on Thursday during court proceedings when one of the matters—a civil suit seeking the final forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Mr. Malami—was called for mention. In a brief statement, Justice Egwuatu cited personal reasons and the need to uphold the interest of justice as the basis for stepping aside from both cases.
The matters had only recently been reassigned to him by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, following their earlier handling by Justice Emeka Nwite during the court’s Christmas vacation period. The development means the cases will now be reassigned to another judge of the Federal High Court.
The EFCC’s actions against the former AGF involve allegations of corruption and illicit acquisition of assets during his tenure as Nigeria’s chief law officer. The 57 properties in question are said to be situated across several states and are the subject of ongoing forfeiture proceedings.
No further details were provided by the court regarding the specific personal reasons for the recusal or the timeline for reassignment. The cases are expected to proceed under new judicial oversight in due course.
