The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has commenced a 50-day rotational Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, taking voter enrolment directly to registration areas (wards) across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
Announced by the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Ayobami Salami, the second phase of the nationwide CVR aims to enhance accessibility, boost efficiency, reduce voter apathy, and ensure no eligible citizen is disenfranchised ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"The Continuous Voter Registration exercise is one of INEC’s most critical statutory responsibilities," Prof. Salami stated during a stakeholders' meeting.
"It is the primary means by which eligible Nigerians can register to vote, transfer their registration, correct personal details, and replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs)."
He explained that this phase builds on lessons from the initial rollout by decentralizing the process: "This phase will focus on devolution by rotating the voter registration exercise in Registration Areas (RAs) in all the Local Government Areas across the state for 50 days."
The rotational deployment of INEC Voter Enrolment Devices (IVEDs) began on February 2, 2026, and will run until April 10, 2026. Following the rotation period, a final centralized week will take place from April 11 to April 17, 2026, at LGA offices.
Prof. Salami assured residents of robust preparations, including improved logistics, deployment of well-trained personnel, and enhanced technology to minimize delays and build public confidence in the process.
"The Commission has made adequate arrangements to ensure a smooth and transparent process," he added. "Measures have been put in place to improve logistics, deploy well-trained personnel, and strengthen our technology to reduce delays and boost public confidence."
The REC urged political parties, civil society organizations, media, traditional and religious leaders, youth groups, and women's organizations to actively sensitize and mobilize citizens.
He specifically called on political actors to adhere strictly to guidelines and avoid actions that could compromise the exercise's credibility.
"Voter registration is not merely a civic responsibility; it is the foundation of democratic representation and accountable governance, with attendant shared benefits," Prof. Salami emphasized.
Eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above can participate to:Register as new voters
Transfer their registration to a new polling unit
Update or correct personal details
Replace lost or damaged PVCs
INEC encouraged prospective registrants to take advantage of the ward-level access during the 50-day window and check official channels, including the INEC website and Lagos State INEC social media for specific designated locations and further details.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen voter participation and electoral integrity nationwide as preparations intensify for future polls.
