Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has firmly dismissed speculation about defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his unwavering loyalty to the opposition party.
Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, February 27, 2026, Mohammed emphasized that his visit was strictly about governance, security collaboration, and partnership between the federal and state governments not political realignment.
“I am a PDP man. I am not here for politics or defection. I am here for governance and partnership,” the governor stated categorically.
Mohammed described rumors linking his trip to a possible switch as baseless, coming amid a wave of defections from the PDP, including Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri's recent move to the APC.
With Fintiri's defection, Mohammed remains the sole PDP governor in the North-East geopolitical zone.
The governor also addressed suggestions that he might feel isolated within the PDP, insisting he does not feel “lonely” and highlighting the party's enduring strength as a national platform despite challenges.
He reiterated that politicians have the freedom to choose their affiliations but affirmed his commitment to the PDP.
Discussions with President Tinubu reportedly focused on escalating insecurity in Bauchi State, including bandit attacks on communities. Mohammed sought federal intervention to curb the violence and improve security collaboration.
The meeting and Mohammed's subsequent clarification come at a time of intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several PDP figures realigning toward the APC.
Mohammed's stance provides a counterpoint to the trend, signaling continued opposition resistance in key states.
