I’m Accused of Killing Opposition in Nigeria but I’ve no Gun – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has firmly rejected claims that his administration is deliberately undermining or "killing" the political opposition in Nigeria, humorously pointing out that he has never owned or held a license for a gun.

The president made the remarks on Wednesday during an interfaith Iftar (breaking of fast) event with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Addressing criticisms and allegations linking him to efforts to weaken opposition parties—possibly amid recent defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Tinubu dismissed the accusations as unfounded.

"Critics must talk," he said. "When they accused me of killing the opposition, I didn’t have a gun. I could have given myself a license when I have the authority. But I can’t blame anybody for jumping out of a sinking ship, if they did what we have faced in the challenging period of this country, the terrorism and banditry is causing us havoc."

Tinubu acknowledged the tough security and economic challenges facing Nigeria, including widespread terrorism and banditry, which he described as major disruptions.

He emphasized that people are free to express their views and even switch political allegiances during difficult times. The president called for national unity, urging political leaders to align with the vision of Nigeria's founding fathers by strengthening constitutional democracy through cooperation rather than conflict. "It didn’t say that we should fight," he added. "It’s a good thing that we are working in harmony."

The statement comes against a backdrop of ongoing political tensions, including defections from opposition parties and broader criticisms of the administration's handling of governance and security issues.

No specific incidents of violence against opposition figures were detailed in the president's remarks, and he maintained that democracy thrives on harmony despite differences.
