I will Run as Presidential Candidate In 2027 - Peter Obi Declares

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reaffirmed his intention to contest the 2027 Nigerian presidential election as the leading candidate.

Speaking during a campaign rally for an African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections, Obi dismissed widespread speculation about him accepting a secondary role such as vice president in any potential coalition.

"I am contesting the election as number one," he declared, emphasizing his commitment to leading the ticket rather than playing a supporting position.

The remarks, captured in a viral video circulating widely on social media and reported by outlets like Daily Trust and OsunDefender, come amid ongoing discussions of opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.

Obi, who has aligned with the ADC following his exit from the Labour Party, stressed that his ambition is rooted in national interest, competence, and a vision for a renewed Nigeria not ethnic or personal considerations.

“I’m not contesting the presidential election in 2027 because I’m an Igbo man, but because I’m a Nigerian,” Obi stated in related comments.

“Nobody contesting to be President of Nigeria in 2027 is more qualified than me. If anyone says they are more qualified, let that person challenge me to a live debate.”

The declaration has sparked reactions across political circles, with some interpreting it as a clear rejection of rumored pairings (such as with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar) where Obi might not headline the ticket.

Supporters, often referred to as "Obidients," have hailed the move as a sign of unwavering resolve, while analysts note it could complicate coalition-building efforts in the opposition space.

Obi previously confirmed his 2027 plans in mid-2025, promising to serve only one four-year term if elected and focusing on issues like economic reform, security, and good governance.

His recent statements reinforce that position at a time when he continues to criticize the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, including recent comments on foreign travel priorities amid domestic challenges.

As the 2027 election cycle heats up, Obi's insistence on running at the top of the ticket positions him as a central figure in Nigeria's evolving political landscape.
