Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has publicly stated that he deeply regrets ever knowing or associating with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, describing his past interactions as a serious mistake amid renewed scrutiny from newly released documents related to Epstein's case.
In an exclusive interview with Australia's 9News aired on Wednesday, Gates addressed the controversy sparked by the recent release of millions of pages of Epstein-related files by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The documents have revived public interest in high-profile connections to Epstein, including Gates.Gates firmly denied sensational allegations mentioned in draft emails from Epstein's account claims that he had concealed a se^ually transmitted disease from his then-wife, Melinda French Gates, following alleged encounters with "Russian girls," and that he attempted to secretly provide her with antibiotics.
Gates called these assertions "absolutely absurd and completely false," suggesting Epstein may have written the unsent email in an attempt to defame or extort him.“Apparently, Jeffrey wrote an email to himself. That email was never sent. The email is false,” Gates said. “I don’t know what his thinking was there. Was he trying to attack me in some way? Every minute I spent with him, I regret, and I apologise that I did that.”
Gates explained that he first met Epstein in 2011 and had several dinners with him, motivated by Epstein's claims that he could connect Gates with wealthy individuals willing to donate to global health initiatives through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
“The focus was always, he knew a lot of very rich people, and he was saying he could get them to give money to global health. In retrospect, that was a dead end,” Gates said. “I was foolish to spend time with him. I was one of many people who regret ever knowing him.”
He emphasized that the meetings yielded no meaningful results for philanthropy and reiterated his rejection of any involvement in Epstein's criminal activities. Gates also denied ever visiting Epstein’s private Caribbean island or engaging in any sexual relationships with women associated with Epstein.
The comments come as Gates faces ongoing questions about his past ties to Epstein, with his ex-wife Melinda French Gates previously alluding to difficulties in their marriage linked to these associations. Gates' office has consistently maintained that his interactions were limited to discussions of philanthropy and unrelated to Epstein's illegal conduct.
