The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ireti Kingibe, has ruled out the possibility of joining the All Progressives Congress, APC, despite acknowledging a longstanding personal relationship with President Bol Tinubu.
Speaking on Friday while fielding questions on Politics
Today, a programme on Channels Television, Kingibe said she has known Tinubu
for about 40 years and has no intention of working against him.
“The President has been my friend for 40 years. I have no
reason to work against him,” she said.
The lawmaker, however, stressed that her primary loyalty
remains with the people of the FCT, noting that any collaboration with the
President would be strictly in the interest of her constituents.
“I want what is best for the people of the Federal Capital.
I try to work with him but I can only work with him in as much as the interest
of the people are protected,” she stated.
Kingibe made it clear that joining the APC is not an option,
declaring, “Me joining his political party will never happen.”
She added that although she is one of the founders of the
APC in the FCT and maintains a relationship with the President, she is
dissatisfied with the state of the party in the territory.
According to her, the FCT chapter of the APC has deviated
from the principles of the rule of law, citing the tenure of the current
chairman, whom she accused of seeking a fourth term despite a constitutional
limit of two terms.
Kingibe said there are “many issues” within the party
structure in the FCT that are inconsistent with democratic norms and the rule
of law.
