Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for spending a significant portion of January 2026 on foreign trips, accusing him of prioritizing overseas engagements over pressing domestic crises, particularly the surge in insecurity.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on February 1, 2026, Obi highlighted that the president had already accumulated 23 days abroad during the month across two separate trips.
The first began at the start of the year, with Tinubu returning on January 17. Less than 10 days later, on January 26, he departed again this time for Türkiye where he remained as of January 31.
Obi described January as a critical indicator of the year's direction, noting that the month had exposed Nigeria's deepening challenges rather than progress.
He pointed to an alarming rise in insecurity, including multiple killings and hundreds of kidnappings and abductions. Victims reportedly included vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers, with ransom demands reaching millions of naira.
The Labour Party chieftain questioned the leadership vacuum created by these prolonged absences, suggesting that the president appeared to prefer staying abroad and only returned briefly to Nigeria for select domestic events.
He urged Tinubu to refocus on addressing national problems at home instead of frequent international travel.
This criticism comes amid ongoing debates about the necessity and impact of presidential foreign trips, with supporters often arguing they advance diplomatic and economic interests, while opponents like Obi view them as disconnected from citizens' immediate hardships.
