Governor Douye Diri Defends Defection to APC as Matter of Personal Conviction

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has defended his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a decision driven by deep personal conviction rather than external pressure.

The governor, who formally resigned from the PDP on October 15, 2025, was officially welcomed into the APC on November 3, 2025, in a high-profile ceremony in Yenagoa attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other prominent APC leaders.

Speaking during the January edition of the monthly Praise Night at Government House, Yenagoa, on Monday night, Governor Diri emphasized the fluid nature of politics and urged politicians to embrace change when it serves the greater good of their people.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor said: "There is no static nature in politics because we have alignments and re-alignments. The development and progress of our state is the reason we are in politics.

"I do not just take decisions. I consult, I pray, and my spirit tells me where I should go."Reflecting on his political journey, Diri recounted his past movements across parties: "Most of you know my political trajectory. I have moved from one party to another. I have moved from the National Solidarity Movement, and when the party was dying, we moved to the PDP and then to the Labour Party."

"In the Labour Party, we realised that we had met a brick wall and that was when I was invited to join the PDP again. Assuming I did not move, maybe I would not have become governor today."So, in politics, movement is allowed. Changing camps is allowed, but do it out of conviction. Do not be a slave to anyone. Your destiny and the next person's destiny are not the same."

"If you are convinced and still following that person, please go ahead. But there is no static nature in politics. In political science, we have alignments and re-alignments. The reason we are in politics is for the development and progress of our state."

"What are we doing to hand over this state to our children? Do we hand over confusion, misunderstanding and enmity to our children because of somebody's personal interest?"

Governor Diri reaffirmed his administration's commitment to sustaining development initiatives in Bayelsa State, aiming to overcome ongoing challenges and position the state for long-term progress and stability.

He stressed that his choices, including the recent party switch, were guided by a focus on delivering tangible benefits to the people rather than personal or partisan loyalty.
