Galadima Defends Kwankwaso Over U.S. Congress Proposal, Accuses Media, Politicians of Smear Campaign

Veteran politician and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chieftain Buba Galadima has strongly criticized Arise News, ThisDay, and certain politicians for what he described as complicity in spreading claims linking former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to a U.S. terrorism-related list.

The controversy stems from a bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Republican Congressmen Riley Moore and Chris Smith. The proposed legislation, focused on religious freedom and accountability in Nigeria, recommends targeted sanctions—including visa bans and asset freezes against Kwankwaso, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), and groups labeled as Fulani ethnic militias.

The bill cites alleged links to violations of religious freedom and insecurity, though it does not represent an official U.S. government designation or watchlist placement at this stage. In response, Galadima dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and unfair to Kwankwaso.

He emphasized that Kwankwaso did not aggressively implement Sharia law during his tenure as Kano governor in a manner that aligned with strict interpretations, noting that this stance contributed to Ibrahim Shekarau's emergence as governor.

"How can anybody accuse Kwankwaso, who lost during the battle over Sharia?" Galadima questioned. "What about those who started it?"He further argued that the claims are part of a deliberate political strategy by individuals and groups fearful of Kwankwaso's potential role in future elections, such as running for president or vice president in 2027.

According to Galadima, the accusations aim to "eliminate" Kwankwaso from the political landscape.Galadima described the narrative tying Kwankwaso to terrorism financing or Sharia-related issues as baseless, asserting that Kwankwaso was actually a "victim" of the Sharia implementation era rather than its proponent.

He portrayed the entire episode as election-related intrigue designed to undermine a prominent political figure.
