The Federal Government has given the green light for the dualisation of the 420-kilometre Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe highway, a major infrastructure project linking Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, and Gombe states.
The approval, granted by the Federal Executive Council, aims to transform the existing single-lane road into a modern dual carriageway to improve connectivity, reduce travel times, boost trade, and enhance economic activities across the North-Central and North-East regions.
The project incorporates innovative features, including street lighting, solar-powered lights, irrigation dams, and renewable energy components. These additions are designed to support agricultural development along the corridor and position the highway to generate future carbon credits through sustainable practices.
The announcement was made by a government official during an on-site inspection of the ongoing rehabilitation works on the 35.4 km Bauchi–Gombe section, which is being handled by Triacta Nigeria Limited. The inspection highlighted progress on this segment as part of broader efforts to upgrade federal roads.
This dualisation forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's push to prioritise critical road infrastructure, described as one of four key "four-legged" projects under his leadership.
Upon completion, the upgraded highway is expected to ease transportation of goods and people, lower logistics costs, stimulate socio-economic growth in the affected states, and strengthen regional integration.
