Femi Fani-Kayode has accused activist Omoyele Sowore of desperation for attempting to drag up 11-year-old statements he made about President Bola Tinubu in order to defend himself in an ongoing criminal defamation trial.
In a strongly worded post on X, Fani-Kayode denied ever claiming that President Tinubu was responsible for the 2003 murder of Chief Funso Williams.
He clarified that his actual remark during the 2015 election campaign when he served as Director of Media and Publicity for then-President Goodluck Jonathan was: "I am not Funso Williams: I cannot be killed like a chicken."
He said he retracted and apologized for the statement long ago, calling it inappropriate and open to misinterpretation.
Fani-Kayode described Sowore's tactic as an attempt to rope him and Reno Omokri into Sowore's legal troubles, which stem from alleged defamatory posts about President Tinubu.
He emphasized that both he and Omokri have since retracted earlier criticisms of Tinubu, joined or supported the APC, and actively defended the president.
He recounted his own shift: leaving the PDP six years ago, joining the APC in 2021, and serving as Director of New Media and Special Operations in Tinubu’s successful 2023 presidential campaign, where he led a 250-person team.
Fani-Kayode urged Sowore to retract his statements about the president or face the consequences in court, describing the activist’s approach as “asinine” and unlikely to succeed.
He praised Tinubu’s “decency and humanity” for welcoming former critics into his fold and vowed continued support for the president, dismissing Sowore as a “nauseating & inconsequential little distraction.
”The remarks come as Sowore’s trial for alleged defamation continues in a Federal High Court in Abuja, with debates over the admissibility of historical political statements.
