Flight operations at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu came to a complete halt this morning following a protest by aviation workers against the Federal Government's concessioning of the facility to private operators.
The industrial action, led by members of aviation unions affiliated with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), was carried out on directives from their national leadership.
Workers expressed strong opposition to the recent concession agreement, citing concerns over lack of transparency in the process, inadequate consultation with labor unions, and uncertainty regarding job security and staff welfare under the new private management.
Sources close to the situation indicated that workers were particularly upset by reports suggesting the airport was concessioned to interests linked to a South-East governor and a prominent Anambra State businessman, without sufficient assurances about the future of existing employees.
Despite earlier protests and ultimatums from unions demanding safeguards and engagement, the concerns reportedly went unaddressed, prompting the shutdown.
As a result of the protest, passengers were evacuated from the terminal building and left stranded, while all incoming and outgoing flights were suspended.
Airlines operating to and from Enugu, including those from major hubs like Lagos and Abuja, reported significant delays and disruptions.
The concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport to a private consortium (identified in reports as Aero Alliance) is part of the Federal Government's broader aviation reform agenda aimed at modernizing infrastructure through public-private partnerships.
However, unions have described the process as opaque and exclusionary, warning that failure to address their demands could lead to further industrial unrest.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the duration of the shutdown or potential resolutions, leaving travelers and stakeholders awaiting updates on when normal operations might resume.
