Electoral Act: Why real-time electronic transmission of result is challenging – Senate spokesman

Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Yemi Adaramodu, has claimed that real-time electronic transmission of results has a major challenge.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, Adaramodu said real-time electronic transmission of result involves strong network availability.

According to him, there are polling units in Nigeria where there is no network availability.

He added that if there is no network, the portals will not open, stating that this means the real-time has already been defeated.

Recall that Senate on Wednesday turned down a proposed change to Clause 60, Subsection 3, of the Electoral Amendment Bill that aimed to compel the electronic transmission of election results.

Speaking on the development, the lawmaker said: “Network is a great challenge to the real-time electronic transmission of election results. If there is no network, these portals will not open, which means the real-time has already been defeated.

“When the portal is not open and the presiding officer says he’s going to where there’s network to upload, and then somebody who has lost an election in that polling unit will begin to grumble that they want to rig him out. That’s the problem.”
