Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is set to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, February 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
This follows a dramatic incident at Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday, February 12, 2026, where security operatives reportedly attempted to arrest him shortly after his arrival from Cairo, Egypt, on Egypt Air flight MS 877.
El-Rufai resisted the move, insisting on a formal invitation or warrant, and his legal team has condemned the action as unlawful, arbitrary, and a violation of his constitutional rights.
Reports indicate that his international passport was seized during the confrontation.According to his counsel, Ubong Esop Akpan, the EFCC had issued an invitation to El-Rufai's residence in December 2025 while he was abroad for medical treatment and rest.
The legal team maintained ongoing communication with the commission, assuring voluntary compliance upon his return.
They explicitly notified the EFCC that El-Rufai would present himself at their office on the specified date and time.
The EFCC has denied involvement in any arrest attempt at the airport, stating that operatives were not part of the incident and emphasizing that an invitation had already been extended and agreed upon for Monday.
El-Rufai has expressed his willingness to honor the invitation and address the allegations.
The episode has sparked discussions on rule of law and executive overreach, with El-Rufai himself calling for Nigeria to move beyond such practices.
His legal team has threatened further action over the alleged violations.
