The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has firmly rejected allegations by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's media aide that the ex-governor experienced nosebleeding while detained by the agency.
ICPC spokesperson Okor Odey described the claim as untrue, stating on Tuesday, February 24, 2026: “The allegation that he (El-Rufai) bled from his nose yesterday while in the custody of the ICPC is not true please.”
The denial comes in response to a statement from El-Rufai’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adekeye, who raised concerns over the former governor’s health and treatment in detention.
Adekeye alleged that El-Rufai suffered an overnight episode of nose bleeding, and that his legal team and family have faced difficulties accessing him.
He also claimed that one of El-Rufai’s wives was prevented from delivering his meal directly on February 17 and had to hand it over to commission personnel.
Adekeye further noted that El-Rufai’s lawyers have not been presented with any remand order justifying his continued detention beyond the initial 48 hours without formal charges.
Despite submitting a bail application following interrogation, no response has been received from the ICPC.
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, following a two-night detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He voluntarily reported to the EFCC on February 16 in connection with probes into alleged financial impropriety during his governorship from 2015 to 2023.
The investigations by both agencies stem from accusations of financial misconduct, including a 2024 indictment by the Kaduna State House of Assembly over the alleged diversion of N432 billion in public funds and money laundering, with recommendations for his prosecution.
The controversy has drawn public attention, including calls from figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for transparency regarding El-Rufai’s whereabouts, health, and access to family and legal counsel.
A fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by El-Rufai against the Federal Government, ICPC, EFCC, and Department of State Services (DSS) is scheduled for hearing on February 25, 2026, seeking bail and related reliefs.
The ICPC maintains that El-Rufai has not faced any health challenges during his time in their custody, amid ongoing scrutiny of the detention process.
