Edo commissioner urges e-transmission protesters to 'save their energy'

Amid the controversy surrounding the real-time transmission of election results, Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, has advised protesters to save their energy.

Afegbua gave this advice on Monday when he appeared on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’.

Speaking on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, Afegbua insisted that no one can arm-twist or force a legislation on a people.

“I will advice those who want to protest that they should save their energy. You cannot arm-twist or force a legislation on a people.

“I’ve listened to quite a number of commentaries on this issue of real time in the electronic transfer of results and a lot of the information out there are actually not practicable in terms of what obtains during the election.

“And if you take a holistic view of the entire Electoral Act, there are other provisions of the Act that are not being looked into in discussing the e-transmission of election results

“The simple law or doctrine of democracy is that majority will have their way, minority will have their say in the Senate, APC members are more in the House,” he said.

Recall that the Senate on Wednesday reportedly turned down a proposed change to Clause 60, sub-section 3 of the Electoral Amendment Bill that sought to make electronic transmission of election results compulsory.
