Edo Attack: Peter Obi Should Have Informed Us Before Coming – Commissioner

Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, has stated that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi should have notified the state government before visiting Edo State, amid reactions to a recent gun attack on him and other African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders.

Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today programme, Afegbua reacted to the incident described by some as an assassination attempt, which occurred on Tuesday in Benin City during an ADC event.

He clarified a statement made by Governor Monday Okpebholo in July last year, saying it had been misinterpreted as a demand for clearance.

“People misinterpreted what Governor Okpebholo meant when he made the statement in July last year, to the extent that anytime Peter Obi wants to come to Edo, he should please inform the state government,” Afegbua said.

He added: “But because Obi is a politically exposed person, we would expect that he would extend the courtesy of informing the government of the day.”

Afegbua further described the attack as internal to the ADC, stating: “What happened in Edo should be located within the ambit of the ADC, one factional group of the ADC versus another faction of the ADC.”

The commissioner also reportedly referred to Peter Obi as a “problem” to Edo politics, claiming that any party he associates with experiences crisis.

The incident involved gunmen attacking the ADC secretariat and the residence of former Edo Governor and ADC leader John Odigie-Oyegun, where Obi and others, including Olumide Akpata (former LP governorship candidate who defected to ADC) were present.

No casualties were recorded, though vehicles were damaged and several people injured in related chaos.

Police have launched a full-scale investigation, with the Edo State Commissioner of Police visiting scenes and promising to identify and prosecute those responsible.
