Businessman Isaac Fayose has described Monday's demonstration at the National Assembly complex as merely a "warning protest," signaling that further action depends on the outcome of the Senate's emergency session scheduled for Tuesday.
Protesters, including various Nigerians, gathered at the National Assembly on Monday to demand that real-time electronic transmission of election results be made mandatory in the ongoing Electoral Act amendments. They insist that the legislation must explicitly include the phrase "real-time electronic transmission" to ensure transparency and prevent manipulation during result collation.
The Senate has previously clarified that it did not outright reject electronic transmission of results, despite public reports suggesting otherwise. However, protesters argue that lawmakers must remove any ambiguity by making it compulsory.
In response to the mounting concerns, the Senate announced an emergency plenary sitting on Tuesday to address the issue directly.Speaking to journalists at the protest site, Fayose emphasized the importance of electronic transmission for credible elections.
He used a vivid analogy to highlight risks in manual collation: “We all know what happens in a collation room. A collation room is a room where you soak garri with water in the night and before you return in the morning, it has swollen up and turned to eba."He added, “For Nigerians to be happy, what we need is electronic transmission of results. They are already denying it. Let’s wait till tomorrow. This one is just a warning.”
Fayose also questioned any potential rollback of the system, noting the significant public investment involved: “Something that we spent close to a trillion to achieve, you want to throw it away just like that? It’s like carrying our money and throwing it inside the gutter, no it can’t happen like that.”
