Activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju on Tuesday expressed optimism
that former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and ex-Kaduna
State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, would soon join the ongoing Occupy National
Assembly protest.
The demonstration follows the Senate’s passage of the
Electoral Act 2022 Amendment Bill 2026 through a third reading, during which
lawmakers removed the phrase “real-time” transmission of election results from
the bill.
Although the Senate has issued several clarifications amid
reports that it rejected electronic transmission of results, protesters remain
dissatisfied.
They insist that lawmakers must clearly and explicitly
include “real-time electronic transmission” in the proposed legislation.
Several eminent Nigerians have already joined the protest at
the National Assembly.
Reacting to the development, Adeyanju noted that individuals
who previously mocked activists and allegedly sponsored thugs to attack them
during anti-government protests are now participating in the current
demonstration.
In a post on his social media page, Adeyanju wrote: “All the
people that mobilized thugs to attack us and mocked us for protesting for years
are now protesting.
“We welcome them to the other side. Hoping Comrade Malami
and El-Rufai join soon.”
