The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to strengthening partnership with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to leverage space-based technologies for enhanced national security operations.
The minister stated this during a working visit by a NASRDA delegation, led by Director General Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, to the ministry's headquarters at Ship House, Abuja, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
General Musa stressed that intelligence-driven operations are vital to combating terrorism, banditry, and trans-border crimes.
He underscored the critical role of satellite surveillance, radar imaging, and signal analytics in improving situational awareness, identifying criminal routes and hideouts, and providing real-time support to frontline troops.
He called for greater synergy between NASRDA and the Defence Space Administration (DSA) to ensure seamless integration of space assets into military operations and avoid duplication of efforts.
Dr. Adepoju outlined Nigeria’s existing space capabilities and international partnerships, revealing that President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of additional satellites, including advanced radar systems to boost the national security architecture.
The NASRDA delegation also presented proposals for improved border surveillance and real-time intelligence support, aimed at enhancing environmental awareness and operational effectiveness for security agencies.
Both parties committed to fast-tracking collaboration, aligning mandates, and building a coordinated framework to fully deploy space technology in defence of Nigeria’s security interests.
This renewed partnership marks a significant step toward integrating advanced orbital capabilities into the nation’s defence strategy.
