Criticism of foreign military presence not unpatriotic - Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says criticism of foreign military presence is not unpatriotic.

Obi made this statement on Sunday while responding to a post on X.

He said the argument presents a false choice, as if the only options are accepting foreign troops or offering empty sympathy.

According to him, wanting accountability, sovereignty, and long-term self-reliance does not mean someone supports terrorism or prefers inaction, stressing that security cooperation is one thing while dependency is another.

“The real question isn’t which foreign country should send troops, it’s why, after years of budget allocations and military spending, Nigeria still struggles to secure its own territory independently.

“Criticism of foreign military presence isn’t unpatriotic. In fact, it can come from a place of wanting stronger institutions, better leadership, and a self-sufficient security architecture.

“We should demand effective solutions, not frame debate as accept help or keep quiet,” he wrote.
