The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized airpower as a decisive force multiplier in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, during the flag-off of Operation Savannah Shield in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Speaking alongside Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke and other service chiefs at Sobi Cantonment Parade Ground on February 19, 2026, General Oluyede described the new joint operation as intelligence-driven and structured for long-term success.
It combines direct military strikes (kinetic) with community engagement, intelligence gathering, and support measures (non-kinetic) to deliver lasting security in Kwara and parts of Niger State.
Air Marshal Aneke reinforced the CDS’s point, stressing that sustained operational readiness serviceable aircraft, actionable intelligence, and mission-focused personnel is essential for effective air support.
He assured the Nigerian Air Force’s 303 Composite Group in Ilorin of continued headquarters backing in logistics, training, and welfare to keep platforms ready and responsive.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq attended the ceremony and commended the Armed Forces for their commitment.
He said residents would now “breathe a sigh of relief,” pledging full state collaboration with security agencies to protect communities and build on the operation’s gains.
Operation Savannah Shield, approved by President Bola Tinubu, targets terrorist groups, kidnappers, and bandits operating in vulnerable border zones, including Kainji National Park.
The launch signals the military’s unified push to intensify internal security efforts nationwide and deny criminals safe havens. Residents are urged to provide timely intelligence to support the troops.
