Buhari I Worked With in 1984 Was Same Man Until His Death – Gambari

Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has strongly rejected longstanding conspiracy theories alleging that Buhari was replaced by a Sudanese impostor known as "Jubril of Sudan."

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, Gambari affirmed that the Buhari he served under during the military regime in 1984–1985 was the exact same person he worked with until Buhari's passing.

“I’m sorry to disappoint. I had no doubt at all that the Buhari I knew in 1984 was the same until his death. That was really quite a silly thing to say he was a different person (Jubril of Sudan),” Gambari stated emphatically.

He recalled a personal conversation with Buhari when the latter offered him the Chief of Staff position in 2020, noting how Buhari reminisced in detail about their shared experiences and the loyalty Gambari demonstrated during their earlier collaboration.

According to Gambari, there was “nothing like ‘Jubril of Sudan’ as widely purported by some Nigerians.”

He attributed the persistence of such rumors to a segment of the population inclined to “believe the worst about anything and any government.”

The "Jubril of Sudan" narrative emerged years ago amid speculation about Buhari's health and prolonged medical trips abroad, with claims suggesting he had died and been substituted by a Sudanese clone or lookalike named Jubril (or Jibril).

Buhari himself previously described the rumor as unfunny and baseless.Gambari's remarks serve as one of the most direct rebuttals from a close aide, reinforcing that no such replacement occurred and dismissing the theory as unfounded and absurd.
