Bayelsa Police Arrest 60-Year-Old Suspect Over IED Explosion at State Secretariat


Authorities in Bayelsa have arrested a 60-year-old man in connection with a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that occurred early Wednesday morning at the State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa.


The incident, which took place around 6:00 a.m. on February 11, 2026, caused temporary panic, leading to the evacuation of workers and visitors from the complex. 


However, prompt action by security forces prevented any casualties or property damage.


Commissioner of Police Iyamah Daniel Edebor led a rapid response team, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit, and other tactical squads, to the scene. 


Operatives successfully contained the explosion, cordoned off the area, and conducted a thorough search. During the operation, they discovered and safely neutralized one unexploded IED.


The suspect, identified as Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old man from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was apprehended at the scene. 


He is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. 


Police say he will face charges in court upon completion of investigations.DSP Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer for Bayelsa State Command, confirmed that the situation is now fully under control and normalcy has been restored.


"The Bayelsa State Police Command wishes to assure the public that the situation is under control," Mohammed stated. 


"Members of the public are advised to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear."


No further details on the motive behind the incident have been released as investigations continue.
