The Bauchi State Government has approved the payment of monthly stipends to imams and pastors across the state, in a move aimed at supporting religious leaders irrespective of sect or denomination.
The decision was reached during a State Economic Council meeting chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed on February 3, 2026, with key financial and revenue stakeholders in attendance.
Briefing journalists after the closed-door session, Head of Service Mohammed Sani Umar Esq. and Chief Economic Advisor to the Governor, Alhaji Yahuza Adamu Haruna, announced the approval.
According to the Head of Service, the council deliberated on the matter before Governor Mohammed gave the go-ahead for monthly stipends to be paid to imams leading Juma’at mosques and pastors in various churches statewide.
The announcement did not specify the amount of the stipend or the criteria and process for selecting beneficiaries.
Umar noted that further steps would involve assessing the economic and financial implications to ensure smooth implementation.
The council also discussed the commencement of salary payments to newly created emirs and district heads across the state, confirming that adequate funds have been allocated for their sustenance.
In addition, the Chief Economic Advisor highlighted progress in salary administration reforms.
He revealed that collaboration with a consulting firm helped identify and remove over 3,000 ghost workers from the payroll, resulting in savings of more than N4 billion for the state.
He added that since the state took direct control of salary payments from the consulting firm in August 2024, public complaints about salary issues have ceased.
The initiative comes amid the state’s broader efforts to strengthen governance, improve revenue management, and support key community figures, including religious and traditional leaders.
