Barau Donates ₦100 Million to Victims of Devastating Singer Market Fire in Kano

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, on Sunday visited the Singer Market in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State to commiserate with traders devastated by a massive fire outbreak that destroyed goods and properties valued at over ₦5 billion.

The inferno, which began on Saturday and raged into the following day, affected more than 1,000 businesses and left seven people missing, marking one of the worst disasters in the market's recent history.

The market, a key commercial hub in Kano, has suffered multiple fire incidents in quick succession.Welcomed by market chairman Alhaji Junaidu Zakari and thousands of affected traders, Senator Barau announced a personal donation of ₦100 million to help alleviate the hardship faced by the victims.

In his address, the senator expressed profound grief over the tragedy, emphasizing its widespread impact.

"This fire outbreak and the enormous losses recorded have affected all of us," he said. "Commerce is the mainstay of Kano, so we are deeply touched by this incident. It affects not only the traders but the entire people of Kano and the nation at large."

Senator Barau, who also serves as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, pledged to advocate for the installation of a modern fire control facility at the market to prevent future occurrences.

Market chairman Alhaji Junaidu Zakari thanked the senator for his visit and ongoing support, noting the market's repeated fire outbreaks.

"We are proud to have you in Kano. We appreciate all the support you have been giving us. You have done a lot for us. Thank you very much," he said.

The delegation accompanying Senator Barau included the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, Kano State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Malam Salisu Sagir Takai, members of the Kano State House of Assembly, and other aides.

The visit follows earlier responses to the disaster, including sympathy messages from President Bola Tinubu, who ordered a thorough investigation, and calls from Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for federal intervention with advanced firefighting equipment, including aerial support, to bolster emergency response in major markets like Singer.

The cause of the fire has been linked by the Federal Fire Service to a solar battery explosion, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the bustling commercial area.
