Bandits Kill 30, Abduct Several in Zamfara Community

No fewer than 30 residents were killed and several others abducted when suspected bandits launched a deadly overnight attack on Dutsin Dan Ajiya village in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The assault took place on Thursday night, February 19, 2026, extending into the early hours of Friday. Heavily armed gunmen arrived on motorcycles, blocked all entry and exit routes to trap villagers, then unleashed sporadic gunfire, set buildings ablaze, and targeted fleeing residents.

A community resident, speaking anonymously, described the horror: "After the attack, we realised that 30 people were killed; some were wounded, while several others are at large and nobody knows their whereabouts."

The attackers also abducted multiple people, including women and children in similar recent incidents across the region.

Casualty figures vary across reports, with some sources citing up to 50 deaths as the gunmen reportedly moved between nearby villages.

A state lawmaker representing Bukkuyum South, Hamisu A. Faru, told Reuters that the raiders operated from around 5 p.m. Thursday until 3:30 a.m. Friday, leaving widespread devastation.

The attack shows the persistent security crisis in Zamfara, a hotspot for banditry involving killings, mass abductions for ransom, and displacement.

Armed groups, sometimes linked to factions like Lakurawa, continue to exploit rural vulnerabilities despite ongoing military operations.

No official confirmation of casualties or rescue operations for the abducted was available from Zamfara State authorities or security agencies as of Saturday morning. R

esidents have expressed deep frustration over repeated failures to protect communities from such prolonged raids.
