BREAKING: Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Mark Lead Opposition Press Conference in Abuja

Heavyweight opposition figures Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and David Mark have gathered at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja for a major world press conference themed “Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy.”

The leaders, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Senate President David Mark (now National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress,(ADC)are heading the event, drawing from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ADC, and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The press conference centers on strong opposition to the newly enacted 2026 Electoral Act amendment, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after National Assembly passage. Critics, including these leaders and civil society groups, decry provisions allowing manual collation of results during network failures, claiming it risks undermining transparency and enabling manipulation.

They are advocating for mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units to enhance accountability and restore voter confidence.

Other notable attendees include former Osun State Governor and ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, Salihu Lukman, Senator Dino Melaye, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and more.

This unified appearance marks a key step in the opposition's coalition-building efforts via the ADC platform, aimed at addressing electoral reforms and countering perceived threats to democracy ahead of the 2027 elections. The event is ongoing, with further statements expected on their demands and strategy.
