ASUU commences indefinite strike at Taraba varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo Chapter, has announced the resumption of its previously suspended indefinite strike action.

The resumption of the strike coincides with the beginning of the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Union stated that the move follows the failure of the state government to implement the agreement reached on January 17, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Union’s Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, and issued to newsmen on Wednesday, the Union noted that key “grey areas” in the agreement remain unaddressed.

According to the statement, “The strike was earlier suspended in good faith to allow the government adequate time to address the agreed issues.

“However, the government has failed to take concrete and verifiable steps toward fulfilling its obligations.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the reasons for the resumption of the strike hinge on the absence of a functional pension scheme for the university; the failure to pay the backlog of outstanding salaries owed to our members; the inability of the government to settle accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA); and the non-implementation of the newly negotiated ASUU-FGN agreement of 2025.”

Dr Mbave further emphasised that the delay in addressing these issues has severely affected staff welfare, morale, and the overall functioning of the university system. He added that the union resorted to industrial action as a last resort after dialogue proved unsuccessful.
