The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured decisive victories in the by-elections for the Ungogo and Kano Municipal constituencies in the Kano State House of Assembly, held on Saturday amid a boycott by major opposition parties.
In Kano Municipal Constituency, APC candidate Aliyu Nabil Daneji polled 7,484 votes to claim the seat. The Returning Officer, Professor Ibrahim Tajo Siraj, announced the results and declared him duly elected.
Similarly, in Ungogo Constituency, APC's Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad garnered 8,975 votes to win convincingly.
Returning Officer Professor Ali Tijjani Abdullahi declared him the winner, noting he had satisfied all legal requirements.
The by-elections were conducted to fill vacancies created by the deaths of the previous lawmakers, both originally elected on the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platform who passed away in December 2025.
Notably, the winning candidates are the sons of the deceased legislators.Opposition parties, including the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), boycotted the polls, citing alleged irregularities, security concerns, and claims that the process favored the APC.
Despite the low turnout attributed partly to the ongoing Ramadan period the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) described the exercise as peaceful and orderly.
The Kano State Electoral Commissioner highlighted residents' discipline and commitment to peaceful participation. With these wins, the APC strengthens its position in the Kano State House of Assembly.
No detailed vote counts for other parties were widely reported due to the boycott, though minor opposition candidates received minimal votes in the contests.
