Concerned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State have called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to show humility and political maturity by resolving his rift with Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
In a statement signed by Mr. Tivlumun Terseer (President) and Comrade John Terngu (Secretary), the group expressed worry over persistent tensions and what they described as “revisionist narratives” surrounding the party’s emergence and 2023 victory in the state.
They stressed that Senator Akume former governor, senator, and minister was instrumental in building, strengthening, and leading the APC to its sweeping success in Benue.
“Without Senator Akume’s leadership, sacrifice, and political capital, the APC would not have recorded the sweeping victory it achieved in Benue State in 2023,” the statement read.
The appeal follows reports of deepening divisions, including parallel ward congresses that produced conflicting executive structures across the state’s 23 local government areas.
The group also criticized recent remarks attributed to Vice President Kashim Shettima as “misinformed and detached from the political realities on ground in Benue,” while reaffirming full loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the presidency.
Citing examples from other states, they warned that unresolved disputes such as the Rivers crisis between Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara can spiral into major setbacks, and contrasted this with the more consultative model seen in Lagos under President Tinubu’s guidance.
The stakeholders cautioned that sidelining Akume, a prominent North-Central figure and key institutional player, could diminish the APC’s influence in Benue and weaken its position nationally ahead of the 2027 elections, when President Tinubu is expected to seek re-election.
“No governor succeeds in isolation; the 2023 victory was a collective effort,” they noted. “To surpass that performance in 2027, Benue APC must remain united under tested leadership.”
They urged Governor Alia to adopt a reconciliatory stance, rally around Akume as the APC’s political leader in Benue, and foster unity, respect for party elders, and alignment with the presidency to secure the state as a stronghold.
The group also advised those benefiting from state resources to exercise restraint and decency, warning that continued fragmentation would only advantage opposition parties.
This latest call aligns with earlier reconciliation appeals, including from Vice President Shettima, aimed at preventing the rift from undermining party cohesion and electoral chances in 2027.
