The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State is facing a deepening internal crisis, with rival factions aligned to Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje openly clashing over supremacy in the party's structure, particularly in Kano Municipal Local Government Area.
The latest escalation came when supporters of the two influential figures organized parallel stakeholders' meetings in the local government, despite the gatherings being intended to foster unity and strengthen cohesion within the party.
Instead, the separate events highlighted growing mistrust, rivalry, and unresolved power struggles.
One meeting, backed by the Ganduje camp, included key figures such as the APC Chairman of Kano Municipal, Alhaji Sani Abubakar Mai Fata Sharada, Muntari Ishaq Yakasai, Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, and others. Meanwhile, a rival session loyal to Senator Barau Jibrin took place at a different venue, led by figures like Hon.
Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada (who sent apologies to the other side in some reports). The dispute has reportedly been building for some time, predating recent political shifts in the state, including the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC.
Tensions reached a flashpoint earlier when a Ganduje-aligned party leader in Kano Municipal, Mutari Ishaq, was allegedly removed or expelled by stakeholders in a move seen as driven by the Barau faction.
Party insiders describe the parallel meetings as a clear sign that reconciliation efforts have so far failed to bridge the divide.
The ongoing feud reflects broader factional battles within the Kano APC, involving shifting alliances and competition for influence ahead of future elections.
Observers warn that the deepening split could weaken the party's position in the state if not addressed, amid ongoing political realignments in Kano.
