Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has called for a massive nationwide protest, urging opposition parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and all Nigerians to join the ongoing demonstrations against the Senate’s rejection of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results.
Speaking at the National Assembly complex during Day 2 of the #OccupyNASS protests on Tuesday, Amaechi accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of resisting mandatory e-transmission because it fears fair elections and potential losses in 2027.
He stated, “PDP, ADC, everybody should come out. When there is a protest, all of us should come out.” Amaechi emphasized the need for broader participation, bringing his first son, a medical doctor to the protest ground, explaining that his son’s role was to provide medical assistance if anyone got injured during demonstrations.
The former governor described the discretionary approach to electronic transmission (leaving it to INEC’s discretion rather than making real-time uploads from polling units to the IReV portal mandatory) as “totally unacceptable.”
He vowed that Nigerians would resist and fight against it to ensure electoral
The protests, which gained momentum after the Senate’s February 4 decision to retain the Electoral Act 2022’s flexible wording on result transmission, have seen participation from figures like Peter Obi and civil society activists.
Protesters demand that the ongoing Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 explicitly require real-time electronic transmission to curb manipulation during collation and enhance transparency.
Amaechi’s call for opposition unity and mass mobilization comes amid growing public outrage, with the Senate holding an emergency session today to reconsider Clause 60(3) following a motion by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno.
