Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor made the announcement during a statewide broadcast from Yola, stating that he was joining the APC along with his entire cabinet, key appointees, elected local government chairmen, and other PDP officials in the state.
Fintiri explained that the move was motivated by the best interests of Adamawa State and its people.
He emphasized the need for stronger alignment with the federal government to accelerate development projects, promote national unity, and deliver sustainable progress for the state.
"This decision is in the overall developmental interest of our dear state and its citizens," the governor said.
"Aligning with progressive forces at the center will better position Adamawa to access resources and partnerships necessary for growth."
The defection represents a major boost for the APC, which now controls 30 out of Nigeria's 36 states through serving governors.
It further diminishes the PDP's presence at the gubernatorial level, leaving the opposition party with only a handful of state chief executives.
The move comes amid reports of internal challenges within the PDP in Adamawa and follows similar defections by other governors in recent months, consolidating the APC's overwhelming majority in state leadership.
