The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 33 people were killed in a violent armed cattle rustling incident that occurred on February 18, 2025, in Bui District, Arewa Local Government Area.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman stated that suspected Lakurawa militants described as armed jihadist fighters with links to broader terrorist networks crossed into the district from Gudu Local Government Area in neighboring Sokoto State, apparently intent on rustling cattle.

According to preliminary investigations, residents from several affected communities, including Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilized to resist the attackers.

The confrontation escalated into a fatal clash, resulting in the deaths and the reported destruction of multiple villages. In response, security agencies, working alongside military forces, have intensified operations in the area and deployed additional personnel to restore calm and stability.

The police command expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and the wider Arewa community, describing the loss as tragic and heartbreaking.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious movements immediately, and avoid taking direct action against armed criminals themselves to prevent further casualties.

Targeted operations continue with the aim of apprehending those responsible and ensuring such devastating attacks do not recur in the vulnerable border regions plagued by banditry and emerging militant threats.
