2027: Labour Party Already in Coalition – Gov Alex Otti

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has firmly stated that the Labour Party (LP) has no intention of joining any external coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserting that the party is already inherently a coalition.

Speaking after the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Governor Otti emphasized the party's unique composition and independence.“Labour is already a coalition.

This is the coalition of Nigerian workers and people who are progressive like-minded,” he declared.

“So, I know when people talk about joining another coalition. We have no such plans.”

The comments come amid ongoing political realignments in Nigeria's opposition landscape, including former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi's recent move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and discussions around broader alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The NEC meeting followed a recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that affirmed the removal of Julius Abure as the party's national chairman and recognized the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has since updated its records accordingly, though Abure has rejected the judgment and indicated plans to appeal.

Governor Otti, widely regarded as a key figure in the Labour Party, having been officially recognized as its national leader by some party organs used the occasion to reaffirm the LP's self-sufficiency and focus on internal strengthening rather than mergers or alliances with other platforms.
