Naheem Balogun, a former Peoples Democratic Party House of Representatives candidate, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election under the banner of the African Democratic Congress.
The declaration was made at a ceremony held at the De-Echo Event Centre, Egbeda, which drew ADC leaders and supporters from Alimosho Local Government Area.
Addressing party members and supporters, Balogun highlighted the years of hardship Lagos State and Nigeria have endured, stressing the need for a fresh direction in leadership. He urged citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, calling them vital tools for democratic participation and national renewal.
“The 2023 election sent a clear message. We cannot continue like this. As we approach 2027, Nigerians must get their PVCs and use them to change the fortunes of our dear country,” Balogun said.
He also emphasised that the ADC welcomes strategic collaborations, saying the party remains open to members of other political parties and like-minded individuals committed to good governance and national development.
The ADC Chairman in Alimosho Local Government, Wesley Odeyemi, assured Balogun of the party’s full support, pledging to mobilise voters for a successful campaign.
The House of Representatives aspirant for Alimosho Federal Constituency, Dapo Igbasan, expressed confidence that the ADC would prevail despite political intimidation, while Lagos State House of Assembly aspirant Gideon Adeniran stressed that party unity is key to electoral success.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Lagos politics is expected to be increasingly competitive. Last year, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, also defected to the Lagos ADC, adding another dimension to the emerging race.
It remains uncertain who the ADC will ultimately field for the governorship, even as the ruling All Progressives Congress continues to strategize to retain power.
