Yekini Nabena, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has warned the National Working Committee, NWC, led by Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, against allowing incumbent governors to assume total control of the party’s structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Nabena cautioned that surrendering the party’s machinery to sitting governors could spark internal crises that may threaten the survival of the ruling party. He said such actions could further weaken the APC’s already fragile internal cohesion.
Nabena alleged that nomination forms for the forthcoming
party congresses are reportedly being sent directly to governors, giving them
the power to decide party positions through selection rather than a transparent
and democratic process.
According to him, this approach could mark the beginning of
serious internal unrest within the party.
“As the party prepares for congresses, the report we are
getting is that all the nomination forms are being delivered to the governors,
who will eventually determine who becomes what by selection. This will not end
well. In fact, it will be the beginning of an internal crisis, which may lead
to implosion,” he said.
He urged the party leadership to urgently reverse the trend,
warning that failure to act promptly could worsen the situation.
Nabena also called on party elders and leaders to intervene
by cautioning the NWC against taking steps that could harm the APC.
“It is also important that the elders and leaders of our
party speak up now by calling the NWC members to order so that they won’t
proceed in error,” he stated.
Expressing concern over declining party membership, Nabena
warned that the APC risks alienating its remaining supporters if corrective
measures are not taken. He noted that the party, which once boasted about 40
million registered members, is now struggling to reach 10 million in its
ongoing electronic registration exercise.
He further appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene
before the nationwide commencement of the congresses, stressing that early
action could help prevent an internal implosion within the party.
