11 Suspected Bandits Killed as IED Detonates Prematurely in Zamfara State

At least 11 suspected bandits lost their lives when an improvised explosive device (IED) they were allegedly transporting exploded prematurely near Babbar Doka village in the Dansadau Emirate, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The incident unfolded as the suspects reportedly moved through bush paths on motorcycles, possibly en route to deploy the explosive against security forces amid a surge in banditry and the growing use of IEDs in attacks on operatives in the northwest region.

Local residents described hearing a massive blast. "They were moving through the bush, possibly to plant the explosive against security operatives. The bomb went off with a deafening sound," eyewitnesses told reporters.

Confirming the development, Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, stated that the IED detonated accidentally while the bandits targeted security personnel.

"As fate would have it, the device turned against them," he said. "Sustained security offensives are ongoing across the state."

The commissioner called on residents of Zamfara and neighboring states to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, especially individuals seeking treatment for unexplained blast-related injuries, to assist security agencies in their efforts.

The explosion highlights the increasing risks bandits face from their own weapons as authorities intensify operations against armed groups in the volatile region. No civilian casualties were reported in this incident.

This comes against the backdrop of persistent insecurity in Zamfara, where bandits have increasingly employed explosives in ambushes and road traps targeting both military patrols and civilians.
