At least ten residents were killed and several others injured when gunmen launched near-simultaneous night attacks on two communities in Plateau State on Sunday evening, February 22, 2026.
The assaults targeted Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area and Dorowa Babuje (also referred to as Dorowa Babuje or Ratatis) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area's Ropp District.
The attacks unfolded between approximately 7:15 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., with gunmen opening indiscriminate fire on residents.
In Dorowa Babuje, assailants stormed a local relaxation spot or bar around 7:27 p.m., shooting sporadically and causing widespread panic. Initial reports indicated seven people killed there, with three others seriously injured.
By Monday, February 23, additional bodies were recovered, raising the toll in that community to nine.
The attackers reportedly emerged from the Jong-Wereh area, where they had been camping.
In the nearby Jol community, gunmen arrived on motorcycles from the Manga axis and shot one person dead, despite prior community warnings to security agencies about suspicious movements in the area.
Security forces, including troops from Operation Safe Haven (or Operation Enduring Peace) and Operation Rainbow, responded swiftly to distress calls.
In Dorowa Babuje, military intervention helped contain the violence and prevent higher casualties. In Jol, personnel engaged the attackers and repelled them.
Captain Chinonso Oteh, spokesperson for the operation, confirmed the swift troop response, reinforcement of security in the affected areas, and ongoing investigations to apprehend the perpetrators.
No arrests have been reported.Community leaders from the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYMA), including National President Barrister Solomon Dalyop and Publicity Secretary Rwang Tengwong, condemned the attacks as tragic and devastating, attributing them to armed groups (with some sources describing them as suspected Fulani militias or terrorists in reprisal contexts).
They noted the pattern of recurring violence in these volatile farming communities. The incident sparked protests on Monday, with youths in Barkin Ladi blocking the Jos highway to demand justice and an end to the killings.
This latest violence adds to ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where farmer-herder tensions, reprisals, and banditry have led to repeated attacks, displacements, and loss of life in recent months.
