Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has strongly refuted circulating rumours that he has been endorsing or "anointing" individuals for key executive positions ahead of the forthcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) congresses at both national and state levels.
In a statement issued on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in Maiduguri by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum described the claims as the handiwork of mischief-makers intent on causing division and disaffection within the ruling party.
The governor made it clear that he has not endorsed or anointed any candidate for any position in the upcoming APC congresses, whether at the Gwoza Local Government Area level or across any of the 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Borno State.
He stated categorically:“Let me categorically state that I have not anointed any person for the position of Chairman or Secretary of APC in Gwoza Council during the forthcoming party congress.
"I wish to also stress that I have not anointed any person for any position at the APC congress in any of the 27 LGAs.”
Governor Zulum urged all APC members, faithfuls, and supporters to completely disregard the false rumours, describing them as a deliberate and calculated attempt to derail the party from its focus on good governance, accountability, and service delivery to the people of Borno State.
He further encouraged party stakeholders to engage in constructive consultations and democratic processes to ensure credible and capable candidates emerge for all positions.
“This is a democratic process at work in the delivery of the enormous dividends of democracy at the state and council levels,” the governor affirmed.
The statement comes at a critical time as the APC prepares for its congresses, where party executives will be elected at various levels. Governor Zulum’s denial is aimed at maintaining party unity and preventing unnecessary tension ahead of the exercise.
