Zamfara Govt Accuses Matawalle of Using NSA Office to Abduct Governor's Aide

The Zamfara State Government has alleged that Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, influenced the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to abduct a technical assistant to Governor Dauda Lawal in Abuja.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the governor's spokesman, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the government described the incident as an act of political intimidation and harassment of opposition figures using federal security apparatus.

According to the statement, Saleem Abubakar, a technical assistant in the governor's office, was taken from Abuja on January 7 by operatives reportedly from a special forces unit linked to the NSA's office.

The abductors allegedly acted without an arrest warrant and moved him between facilities to obscure their actions.

"The most unfortunate and worrying part of the abduction of Saleem Abubakar is that it was syndicated through the office of the NSA by the State Minister for Defence, Bello Matawalle," the statement read.

The Zamfara government condemned the action as a "perilous precedent" that undermines the neutrality of national security institutions.

It called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and restrain the NSA's office from being used for political persecution.

"If the Defence Minister or the abductors... have any problem with him, they should charge him in court instead of abducting him," the statement added, vowing to pursue justice in the matter.

The allegations come amid ongoing political tensions in Zamfara, where Governor Lawal (PDP) and former Governor Matawalle (APC, now federal minister) have traded accusations over security and governance issues.

Sources close to Minister Matawalle have dismissed the claims as "false, baseless, and politically motivated," insisting he had no involvement in any arrest or abduction of the aide.
