The Zamfara State Teachers Service Board has terminated the contracts of 109 non-indigenous teachers, citing the expiration of their employment agreements.
In an interview with The Guardian in Gusau, the Board's Chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu Anka, explained that the disengagement followed the natural end of their contract terms.
He noted that 96 of the affected teachers subsequently petitioned the board, alleging a miscarriage of justice, which prompted the establishment of a verification committee.
Following the committee's review, 41 of the complainants were recommended for re-engagement, and the board is currently awaiting approval from the state governor. To address staffing needs, the board has advertised 500 vacancies.
Anka highlighted that over 11,000 applications were received, but the priority is on recruiting teachers qualified in science subjects, as the state already has sufficient indigenous personnel for arts-related disciplines.
The chairman further clarified existing renewal procedures: indigenous contract teachers must formally apply for renewal at least six months before expiration.
Many non-indigenous teachers reportedly failed to do so, leading the board to assume they were not interested in continuation.
Additionally, Anka alleged irregularities among some non-indigenous staff, claiming that several collected state salaries without reporting to work or were simultaneously employed at private schools while drawing government pay.
Meanwhile, 79 of the disengaged teachers have publicly decried their termination as unjust and without clear justification, expressing frustration over the process.
