In a major boost to healthcare delivery in Yobe State, the state government has employed 2,500 health workers and upgraded five General Hospitals to Specialist Healthcare Facilities (SHFT).
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Hospitals Management Board (YOHMB), Dr. Abubakar Yerima, made this known during an inspection tour of ongoing projects and a media briefing at the newly upgraded Specialist Hospital in Buni-Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area.
According to Dr. Yerima, the four other hospitals elevated to specialist status are located in Gashua, Potiskum, Geidam, and Damaturu, the state capital.
He explained that the upgrade is designed to significantly improve access to specialised medical services, drastically reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside the state, save lives, and minimise the time and cost associated with long-distance referrals.
“Our comprehensive strategy centres on infrastructure development, deployment of specialised manpower, and improved staff welfare. These efforts are aimed at curbing medical tourism and preventing avoidable deaths among our people,” Dr. Yerima stated.
Key infrastructure enhancements at the upgraded facilities include:
Construction of a new maternity complex equipped with a special care baby unit to address the high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality
A modern Accident & Emergency (A&E) complex to handle trauma cases, including victims of terrorism and road traffic accidents
Installation of a state-of-the-art twin-theatre and surgical complex, one of only two such facilities in the entire state
Dr. Yerima emphasised that the specialist hospitals are being positioned as high-volume referral centres capable of supporting over 150 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across the state and serving communities in adjoining areas.
He further disclosed that approximately 70 healthcare professionals are currently undergoing residency training to qualify as specialist doctors, while others are receiving specialised training in critical areas such as dialysis, intensive care unit (ICU) management, peri-operative care, and emergency nursing.
The Executive Secretary called on residents to make full use of these upgraded specialist hospitals and to reduce dependence on patent medicine stores for serious medical conditions.
The initiatives are part of the Yobe State Government’s broader commitment to strengthening the healthcare system, improving service quality, and ensuring that quality specialised care is accessible closer to home for all citizens.
