Wike Hands Over 12 New Ambulances to Boost Abuja Healthcare

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike today handed over 12 brand-new, fully equipped ambulances to public hospitals across Abuja, aiming to strengthen emergency medical services and improve response times in the nation's capital.

The vehicles, Toyota Hiace Hi-roof models (2023–2024) procured at a cost of about ₦1.74 billion are outfitted with advanced medical gear, safety features like airbags, and modern tech for efficient operations.

This marks a significant upgrade in FCT emergency healthcare, the first major ambulance fleet addition in years.

At the handover ceremony, Wike stressed that good roads are essential for the ambulances to function effectively, warning that poor infrastructure could render them useless in emergencies.

He tied the initiative to broader efforts, including rehabilitating and furnishing 14 health centres territory-wide and recruiting new health staff.

The minister also addressed the ongoing workers' strike under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), urging compliance with a recent court order suspending the action while the matter remains in court.

"We're still in court obey the order," he said, emphasizing dialogue but prioritizing public service continuity.

The ambulances will be deployed to various FCT hospitals to enhance rapid emergency care, especially in suburban areas.

Officials have signaled future measures to prevent misuse, such as banning ambulances from transporting corpses and introducing dedicated hearses.
