Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructed All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in Kano State to give full support to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf following his recent defection to the party.
Speaking with journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Barau emphasized that the President, as an experienced political figure, urged party stakeholders to collaborate closely with the governor, avoid distractions, and prioritize effective governance for the people of Kano.
Barau described the governor's defection as a significant milestone, stating, “It is a day I will sleep happily because our party has gained a governor. For over a year, we have been receiving decampees from different parties, including the NNPP.
Now, by God’s mercy, we have received a sitting governor of a state like Kano.”He stressed that the APC's immediate priority in Kano should be to rally behind Governor Yusuf to ensure his success, highlighting the importance of party unity for development.
“What is important now is to support him and also advise him, including with prayers. The situation in Kano demands that we come together in a democratic way to help him succeed,” Barau said.
The Deputy Senate President called for the suspension of personal political ambitions and rivalries within the party to promote stability and progress.
He announced that he had personally set aside his own aspirations, adding, “If truly we are for the people, then we must support him.”
Barau warned that denying the governor a second term could disrupt ongoing efforts and harm governance in the state.
Reflecting on his political career, Barau cited past instances where he stepped aside for the greater good, including in National Assembly leadership contests and governorship races in Kano.
“I have always believed in sacrifice for the collective good. If the governor had been in the APC from the beginning, I would not even have talked about contesting. Now that he is in our party, we must support him fully,” he stated.
Barau clarified that Governor Yusuf now has the freedom to run his administration as he sees fit, including making commissioner appointments without interference from party leaders.
“The governor is at liberty to appoint commissioners. We will not push him. If he asks me to nominate, I will, but we will not distract him,” he affirmed.
He attributed the defection to the appeal of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said has drawn many politicians to the APC, including Governor Yusuf, who joined to deliver greater dividends of democracy to Kano residents.
In a symbolic gesture of unity, Barau announced the rebranding of his political support group from the Tinubu/Barau Organisation to the Tinubu, Abba, Barau Organisation.
He urged his supporters to align behind the governor for Kano's development, noting enthusiastic crowd responses during recent events: “When I said Nigeria, the crowd responded ‘Sai Tinubu,’ and when I said Kano, they replied ‘Sai Abba Gida-Gida."
Barau reaffirmed his dedication to public service after more than three decades in politics and pledged continued loyalty to President Tinubu's agenda to advance Nigeria.
